Spirometry represents the most essential, routine lung function test that provides an insight in the mechanics of breathing.
It records the volume of exhaled air over time, during a maximal expiratory effort.
Today, contemporary digital systems offer the possibility to measure and record the Air-Flow in relation to the Volume of air breathed in and out, during a complete respiratory cycle. The results are graphically presented in the form of a Flow-Volume curve. The inspiratory and expiratory segments of the flow-volume curve allow us to determine the type of airway disorder and to also identify its location, in either small peripheral, or large central airways.
Useful for:
- Diagnostic investigation of dyspnea, cough
- Diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Response to therapy
- Preoperative evaluation
- Preventive screening for smokers
- Preventive screening for workers at risk of developing occupational respiratory diseases
